My uncle (long time woodworker, about 60 years old) recommends a big planer 15-16″ delta or equivalent.
I’m still in the mindset of the “portable” and I like the Makita 12″ – I’ve had great experience with other makita tools.
Can anyone expand on the 12″ portable vs the 16″ (on wheels) planer – those with 12″ units – how often did you “wish” you had a bigger unit?
The 12″ makita is $409 at Amazon – and it has about 12 reviews all 4 or 5 star… the 16″ planers start at about 800 (grizley) and go to around 1400 (delta, Powermatic) – I can’t see the need to triple my expenses as a hobbyiest…
Thanks for your input

I wanted to follow-up...
I revisited Amazon and there were actually 27 reviews, none lower than 4 stars. Some by the same person a year or more apart (naturally still delighted)...
So I bit the bullet and bought the Makita. If I need the big planer, I'll go to my Uncle's house :-) (or the small family owned lumber shop downtown that has a full working mill - I'm surprised they are still in business given that Home Depot is only about 10 miles away)
Thanks
