Next week I have the opportunity to buy a Makita 8″ Jointer 115V model 2020 with 60″ bed at auction. I haven’t seen it yet, but does any one know anything about this model. I cannot find any info on the web ( then again maybe I’m not the best at looking ). I assume it is pretty old, can I still get blades? Anybody with experience on this unit? Is it worth looking at?
Thanks
Adam

I owned one and it was a good machine. Makita offered it at the time (1986) as part of a package deal along with the 2040 planer. As with the 2040 it's not a production machine. They didn't offer the 2020 for long in this country ........ for what reason I don't know. The 2020 is pretty rare and I'd check with a Makita factory service center about current parts availability and price. My two cents is that it's definitely worth a look. My main concern would be parts availablity.
There was a discussion of this jointer a few weeks ago on this forum with some knowledgeable comments id I recall. You should check the archives.

Can't seem to find it. Any chance you can point me to the right direction?
Thanks,
Adam
Sorry but that thread was about a Makita planner, not a jointer. My mistake. Gettin too old to trust my memory.
All I did to find the thread was to click on "advanced search", enter makita in the "contains words" field and last two months in the beginning time and click search. It brought up several posts. If you put "makita" and "jointer" in the contains words box you probably wouldn't get anything.
Good luck. Unfortunately, at least around here, woodworking tools go for more at auctions than they are worth. Heard of someone paying $1100 for a well used Delta 15" planner that was selling for $1195 brand new at the store across the road from the auction. Saw a guy pay $75 for a beat up, off brand, benchtop table saw, without a fence that new was no better than the Delta that goes for $100. Go figure!
Don't know if this helps.
I'm the one who started the comments on the Makita Planer.
It's a beautiful machine.
If the jointer is anything like it, you'll love it.
Only problem is that parts are very expensive (but available)

Sounds like you've got it up and running, Jeff. Whatcha think?

Still finishing up, but looks great so far.

Fortuneatly auctions around here are very good as far as woodworking goes. I saw a large powermatic planer (can't remember the dimensions) go for $200. The auctioneers don't seem to think the old tools are worth anything so they don't advertise them as much. Most times they say wood tools at the bottom of the ad and you have to investigate. Last auction I went to, they sold a delta mortising machine as a drill press!
Hope for rain and take an umbrella. That's when you get the really good deals! I'm crossing my fingers for this jointer, a Grizzly 20" bandsaw, a Grizzly 24" Drum Sander, and 1500 bf of lumber all at this next auction!

Good luck at the auction. If you can get the 2020, I think you'll pleased. It is loud...... If I remember correctly it uses a universal motor as does the 2040 planer. One other issue might be dust collection.......... you'll have to fabricate a collection chute of some sort. I still regret the day I sold them both.
