My Makita planer had the switch go bad. Switch #651857-8. There is no switches still available, they are obselete. What is anyone doing to replace it. This planer has an electric brake on the system.

If you are in Canada, there are a few switches at the Whitby Ont Makita depot.
I finally had to replace mine ....Having cleaned it 3 or 4 times over the years.
(after many thousands of Bd/Ft...bought in 1985! Excellent machine!)
If you still can't get your hands on one....it is a fairly simple rocker switch when disassembled, and a contact cleaning will get you back up and running...if you can successfully re-assemble, be sure to remember how it went together... (there are 4 tiny moving parts that are a bit tricky to keep in place while re-assembling.)
Hope you get back up and running soon!
Pics below....
- new switch, and old switch disassembled.
- trickiest part of disassembly is prying off the top switch housing as it is pressed into place (be careful not to damage the main box!)
-then it's a matter of cleaning the contacts and reassembling ....
Good luck....and remember the woodworker's motto...patience.
If your repair job leaves pieces and parts scattered everywhere except in your machine, the other two places I'd suggest for a replacement are Grainger's:(grainger dot com), or e-Replacement Parts:(eReplacementParts dot com),.
My switch is different than yours. The 2030N model takes a rectangular box with around 7 wires in it. The 2030 model has a different switch.
