The rubber planers rollers on my Makita 2040 15 5/8 planer need to be replaced. My local Makita parts dealer almost gave me apoplexy when he quoted a price of almost $400.00 for the outfeed and infeed rollers. Has anyone found an aftermarket alternative?

You can have them recoated. There's a place that advertises in the back of Woodshop News or look under rubber in your local yellow pages. There are many such services throughout the country.
A business called Western Roller Co. can re-tire or coat many types of rollers . The cost is a fraction of the hefty replacement parts from Makita . Depending on how bad yours are , if they just have uneven surfaces or grooves worn, they may be able to be resurfaced . A machinest told me you can true them on a lathe. But he said to put them in the freezer first so the soft rubber can be machined. The company is located in Eugene Oregon. Try the 800 directory assistance for the number . If you need more info on the co. I will be happy to get the contact info for you . Post back if I can be of help to you.
good luck
I had mine rebuilt about 2 years ago by:

Cost $227. Very pleased with the job.
To Rick, Dusty and Arcwood:
Thanks to you all for your assistance with the Makita planer rollers. This was my first post on this board and I have been well rewarded. Lefty Rodan
