At the Edmonton wood show a couple of weeks back, I saw this Makita Plunge Saw. They told me it should be available by December. Looks suspiciously like a Festool however, unlike Festool saws it does not have a riving knife. Looked a little beat up too however, that could be due to all the demo at the show. Unfortunately, I did not have a chance to play with it as I arrived an hour before close and had to get a couple of other things.

Wow...looks EXACTLY like a Festool.
Wonder how it works/what it will cost.
Most nights are crystal clear, but tonight it's like he's stuck between stations.
i saw one at the woodstock wood show in ontario, and looks really sweet for a small shop or job site
i presently cut up large panels using a porter cable circ saw and the veritas edge guide which is a great setup. the guys didnt have a price for it tho
I like the look of it. Looks very fuctional for a shop setting, which is where my bosch worm-drive, which is designed for the jobsite, has to perform. I think the Festool is a good one for what it is made for, but it is in a different tax bracket than me. Why not capitalize on the good idea and make the market a little more accessable?
See..

They list the Festool TS 55 at R4370 (US$660) and the Makita at R4395 (US$664), so it doesn't look there's any price advantage.

Yes... but I have a friend who discounts Makita to the point where the 7 tool 18 volt set is $550 now with an extra battery... this means he will be able to sell this without being constrained by Festools draconian pricing policies. This will change things... Ill sell mine pretty soon... If they will to the CS75 as that is what I have now...Drew
"...I have a friend who discounts Makita..."
Sure, but how do you know that this South African dealer isn't already doing the same thing?

Clarify Steve...-Drew
1) WillGeorge posted a link to a web site for a tool dealer (in South Africa) that is selling the Makita saw.
2) I noted that the prices given by this dealer for the Makita and Festool saws are approximately the same.
3) You commented that your friend discounts Makita equipment, thus implying that you could get the Makita for less than the Festool.
4) I observed that it's quite possible that the South African dealer also discounts Makita equipment, and that the prices shown already reflect such a discount (i.e., the MSRP of the Makita is higher than the MSRP of the Festool, and after the Makita discount is applied, the final selling prices end up about the same).

I see what you were saying... Who knows... maybe this tool will not come to the US? At least from Makita... Makita has some of the best pin and brad nailers out there and you cannot get them any more in the usa.. My buddy actually has someone go get them in Japan for customers here... What I was saying is that if Makita is showing the saw at shows in the US then it is probably coming this direction. Much of Makitas line is made in Georgia I believe. So the weak dollar has less of an effect though i would guess this saw comes from Festools factory. Ultimately more competition will help price wise... furthermore... I am posative that if the tool comes to the USA there will not be Festool style price controls on a particular tool in the Makita line. They may limit what a dealer can advertise the tool at (this is why Amazon makes you put some tools into your cart to see what the price is.) But it will be up to the dealer (as it is now with Makita) what to sell this for. Drew
The history of discounted camera equipment at extremely low prices showed that the material had come from out of the country and that the manufacturer would not honor the warrantee in the US. The serial numbers indicated to the manufacturer where the product was made for. This may or may not apply here.
