Help!!!!! Can any kind follower of Sam Maloof tell me how the back legs are joined to the rear corners of a framed upholstered seat, There are three pieces of wood coming together at this point – the seat side rail , the seat back rail, and the back leg.
A chair of this type is shown on page 77 of “Sam Maloof Woodworker”, whare the joint appears to be made with a single dowel. Surely not strong enough! and aligning the dowels must be a nightmare. Further examples of this type of chair are on pages 136 & 137 of Sam’s book where the joints appear as butt joints with no pellets over screws.
If one uses a box joint at the corner of the seat frame and Sam’s notched and rebated leg
joint ( as used on a solid seat) then the box joint is virtually destroyed.

From looking at the photos on pages 136-137 it looks to me like he is using his standard leg to seat joint. That is a hip joint like he uses on the rockers. He uses dowels on the arm joint, but that is a very low stress condition. Look at the photo on pages 124-125. the joint interface looks almost identical except that he did not use screws to help secure the rear legs since there are no visible plugs. The screws are not really necessary.
Wineman,

There is a rocking chair "group" on Yahoo who may have some insight.

I don't know if this will help, but there is a good video series featuring same maloof. I think it's called a woodworking experience where he discusses the chairs in detail and other things. It took me a long time to watch it all, but wonderful and englightning.

Hope it helps.
If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it.
And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
Thanks bones.I'l look for the video.
Bernard, I don't have the book, is the chair like the one I'm posting? I used the box joint in the front. but used a piece at a 45 deg angle in the back, to join the rear and side rails, leaving out the notch for the rear leg. Most of this brace supports the drop in seat. Bill
