Ran across this last night. For those who can’t find the time to build their own, here’s your chance. I will be interested to see what it goes for.

As far as I know Sam Maloof signed all his work with his name. This rocker doesn't show that. Seems a bit steep price if it is just a copy.

I had that same thought. I was wondering why his name wasn't on it. I also was wondering why they say that it was made in 1965 but then had a 68 on it. Wonder what Ullman means also.

I'm reading Maloof's book, and I think you're right about him signing his work. I know he has assistants now, but I don't think he had any in the 60's. The name stamped on it could have been who he commissioned the work for, but there still should be a signature on the chair.
For that type of buyer's premium, the gallery ought to do a better job with the provenance of the piece (i.e., who it was made for, date delivered, etc.).

Whatever it goes for, it won't be cheap! The auction has a 24.5% buyers premium tacked onto the final price! That seems pretty steep, especially when you're paying 15K for a chair.

I looked through what this firm is offering at auction.
I was underwhelmed.
Starting prices are outrageous. Adding 24+% hammer fee is ridiculous, last I looked Sotheby's hammer fee was 10 - 15% -- although that may have changed.
What struck me most was that none of the ads stated that there was a provenance with these pieces. That's pretty much standard at high-price/quality auctions. Otherwise the buyer has no warranty at all other than the cashed cheque. Yep, you bought it.
For that kind of money, I'd want a notarized provenance and likely a DNA sample of all those that signed it.
Then again, I guess I'm a tad odd.
Ta,
At that price does that come with a Grandma?
The "Maloof" rocker sold.
