I took a course with Sam. He was quite upset because someone came to his shop, traced his templates and then put them on sale thru the net. He did bring some templates and I did trace them and make a rocker. If you would like I could retrace them for you. Malcolm [email protected]
That would be incredible. I am building this rocker for my Mom who grew up in the south when "visiting" was still the norm. Since those days on the front porch she has always owned at least one rocker. I would like to give her one more very special one. Let me know how I can get those templates. Much thanks in advance.
Malcom, I sent an email; but it got kicked back so I'll reproduce it here.
I took a seminar in Texas a couple of years ago from Robert Hensarling who spent some time with Maloof. His rocker is very nice and I have made 6 of them but I would love to compare his templates with some actual Maloof templates. My Mom loves the rocker I made her. Of course all my brothers and sister also want one. They take a lot of time.http://mesquiterocker.com/I'd be glad to send some money to cover materials and shipping if you would be willing to trace your templates.

There are several books published that give numerous photos and details regarding his construction, there is also a video that is helpful. I am just starting the process of building some dinning room chairs based on Maloofs designs. I started by making full size templates on 1/4 inch ply and am now transferring them to 1/2 inch plywood templates that will be cut to size on the bandsaw. I have found it fun and educational to draw up my own full size drawing and the templates. I have already thought through many of the construction details by doing this.
My next step will be to make a mock up of on of the chair out of dimensional lumber to see how I like the dimensions, style and proportions. I can then make refinements and my final chairs will be out of Walnut.
There are countless nuances that make Sam's chairs unique and I doubt that I will capture all of the hardlines, curves and details, but I think that by studying the photos that are published you will get a better appreciation of some of the fine details that may be lost in just obtaining someone else's copies of the chairs.
Good Luck.

PS - I did order the 3 degree rabbit bit from Woodline for the back leg joints, I haven't completed them yet, but for the dinning chair I think it adds a nice detail. The rockers are traditionally a 5 degree bit.
I searched the Woodline site and didn't find the rabbeting bits you mentioned. Do you remember what they called them?
Thanks
Bobby
You can call Woodline at 1-800-472-6950. The 3 degree set is WL6221, the 5 degree set is WL 6220 and a straight 90 degree set is WL 6222. The angled bits are $65, a bit pricey and the straight is $25. I don't think that these are listed on their web page. I emailed them and they sent me a fact sheet that gives all of the specs. They actually put 3 and 5 degree bearings on these things so i suppose that is why the price is higher, they also said a portion of the sales goes to the Maloof Foundation.

I learned from Robert Hesarling in Texas. He teaches a good seminar.

Also there is Hal Taylor in Virgina. His is abit removed from Maloff but still nice.

I have made Maloof Style Rocking Chairs after reading and viewing all I could on the matter. I also had an opportunity to visit with Sam last fall to see his shop, tour residence and personal home. What an inspiration!
I would be willing to share the methods I used to solve certain problems not detailed in the articles, books or videos.
