Recently, by pure accident, I found out that Porter Cable had recalled their 890 router. Over 70,000 units are being recalled for safety reasons. All information is on their WEB site.
I own 2 units, the last one was acquired recently, months after the recall was made… Porter Cable does a wonderful job of replacing, for any woodworker impacted by the recall.
That got me thinking about how many other tools are under recall that we don’t hear about. Definitely, specialized stores won’t necessarily run after you to tell you, and who spends hours checking manufacturer’s WEB sites, just in case…It is to be noted that even FW review of this tool does not mention this recall.
I would suggest that the FW KNOTS add one section/category entitled ‘recalls‘. Readers and manufacturers could post the information. As a public service, I think this would contribute to the woodworker’s overall safety.
It would also be interesting to see if manufacturer’s will proactively inform us. One thing I am sure of, woodworkers will make sure the information goes around.

I second that motion!

That's a great idea, MP. I usually find out about a recall either on a forum, or see it in Workshop News or one of the other mags. They don't have a regular place to check though.
If you're thinking FWW will see your suggestion here, hate to disappoint, but probably not. A note to the editor is your best bet. Or print out the "Yes, great idea!" stuff from here at Knots and send it in!

To check on recalls, try http://www.cpsc.gov/This is where I find out about a recall on my Porter Cable 7 1/4" circular saw.
One good reason to register your tools is that manufacturers will notify registered users when a product is recalled. Not saying everyone needs to, just saying that's a benefit of having done it.My goal is for my work to outlast me. Expect my joinery to get simpler as time goes by.
