Can anyone tell my a way to remove the bark on a seasoned maple burl?
Most of it poped off with some force from my knife, but I want to finish it minus the bark

I've done this. But I am hoping that someone has a great tip.
After it is completely dry, it is easier to remove. I ended up pulling off the big pieces, the carefully picking off everything else. Some of it was really stubborn!

Love your web site, you do some stunning work.
Thank you for the responce I am trying to pick off the bark one little part at a time, tried a wire brush it didn't do much but i will over come one way or another.
We have another post you might be able to help with as well. Need to make some ebonized maple that I can cut smaller after ebonizing they will become pin stripping in a segmented bowl ( the reason they will be recut) .JigSawJohn
One of those little picks used to get the meat out of a Crab or pecan works pretty well too. Just shapen it a bit first.
Sorry to hear about your lung. Bummer, man, that really sucks! I hope you feel okay now.

Why don't you use Wenge or black Ebony?
Hal
Have been using ebony but I am finding that softer woods next to the ebony section gives some problum with density differance when sanding, so I thought I'd try dieing maple since it is closer to the other woods.
I do appreciate all of the imput I am getting gives me room for thought.JigSawJohn
would a draw knife help? It would seem as though it would be easy to control that tool.

John,
Make sure you wear a good mask while you are doing this. As I recall from my reading, there can be some nasty stuff living under that bark that can make you more than a little bit sick if you inhale it, including molds and fungus.
Thank you very much I have lung problums as it is. It seems to have come from maple spore desies, (turning spalted maple) I had part of a lung removed a few years back.JigSawJohn
