A now-defunct magazine, Today’s Homeowner, wrote that maple flooring is difficult to refinish. That magazine was merged into This Old House, so I searched the TOH website but couldn’t find the reference to maple flooring.
In what way is maple a bad choice for floors?

Hi Janet
Maple is a grate floor a little unstable but with good acclamation its no problem.
Do you wont to do a solid or engineered floor?

Janet,
"In what way is maple a bad choice for floors?"
If it has been laid and finished before then there should be no trouble at all re-finishing it.
Here's a link to Ken Fisher's site which is a good source for flooring information.

I recently laid maple in our living room. Aside from maple being hard as a rock, I wouldn't say it's too difficult. It seems like it moves more than oak in the seams, but that could have been my installation technique.
Also, maple doesn't take stain well, but it looks fantastic when it's finished with just a clear product.
Plan on spending a while behind the sander and even longer behind the buffer. But the results are worth it.
Good luck.
Now that you mention staining, that was probably what article meant about maple being difficult to refinish.
Thanks for all the input.
Janet
I've had success staining maple with jell stain. It's hard to wipe off because a little goes a long way.
