I was recently given a black/white marble chessboard by the spouse of a client who recently passed away. I do not really need it, but I could not refuse, given that it was offered to me.
I am thinking of building a small games table and inlaying the marble board, and then donating it to a local charity at their annual fundraising auction (once the world settles down to some normality).
Can anyone give me some suggestions as to what wood species would work visually for this project. The board has a very cool visual feel to it. I would really like to soften that up.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks.

Hard to give that kind of advice without pictures of the chess board. That being said, I think Mahagony is nice and with a satiny finish would look "soft".
I added a picture.
How about Wenge?
Very dark, so not a stark contrast and brown streaks would lead the eye away from the board nicely.
You could try a more patterned wood. Zebrano for the harsher look. Rewarewa for something softer.

I am highly intrigued by the prices of that kind of local charity auction. Did they put enough money on the table? What I mean is - is it worth trying it, or should I donate money directly to the charity? I mean, after selling my work.
The way it works here is that the donation is « paid « by emitting a charity receipt to the donor, the amount is fully tax deductible and the piece is auctioned, the profits go towards a cause, in my wife’s case, it serves to provide African woman’s with medical care after giving birth .
As for the wood, I had a similar decision to make in my bathroom remodeling, the floors are black and white marble in the Art Deco style and the matching wood will be birdseye maple finished in a yellow amber tone like in vogue in the 1930’s.
