Rather than drift the wax thread, here’s a new thread entirely for Bentusi, who has had his eye attracted by Marcou plane-gleam.
Bentusi asks how many planes. I have to confess an embarrassment of riches, although this embarrassment is combined with the gloat-feelings of a hoarder. 🙂
There are seven full-size Marcous and 5 mini Marcous in the plane cupboard. Pics attached. The small plane with the ebony handle shown with the five minis are Philip Marcou’s pics, before he sent them to me. The other pics were taken in me shed after a marathon planing session that ended up employing all of them to fettle various parts for ….. now I can’t recall.
They all get used …. although lately I’ve made some wooden-bodied planes myself and used these in preference for some pieces just ‘cos I can; and they needed a proper testing.
The mini planes currently get used more than the others, as I’ve had an obsession with little box and other small item making, for which the minis are ideal.

Lataxe...I cannot express how insanely jealous I am...
I totally know the feelings of embarrassment and simultaneous gloating, LOL.
Although I have NOTHING of this magnitude to gloat about.
I thought my having LNs made me a fancy boi...You've opened my eyes.
2500 for one...I can seriously make that happen, Lataxe, although not at this moment. I have to pay this Shaper Origin as well as some other pricey purchases recently (I know...I suck at woodworking and have conceded to machines to assist me where they can)
I'd love to have just one of them...What incredible works of art.
Do you have pics of the one you'd potentially let go of specifically?
I have a 2005 Marcou smoother that I was planning on selling at some point. Let me know if you are interested.
Wow!!!
I know I keep coming back and looking at them.....ugh. I'm so jealous.
Jealous? I haven't married any of them planes you know - and neither should you, even if one does become unfaithful and wander in your direction!
Perhaps you merely have a vague feeling of envy? This can easily be assuaged with the purchase of another LN or Veritas plane, which are just as good functionally. Not as purty, though. No. :-)
Of late, I have been buying the odd posh gouge but mostly its the less expensive but well-made green woodworking tools for me. No rubbish but £240 axes and adzes seem over the top when one can buy a good axe for £23 and fettle it to the same level of functionality. (And £90 for two Hungarian adzes of different sweeps). It must be expensive to live in that Sweden!
I've got the sharpening hobby to make it all reet, see? Today I learnt how to sharpen the adzes, with the help of inerwebbery info from that Dave Fisher. :-)
Lataxe, wondering why me first shrink-pot is so ugly.
PS Anyone interested in tool-talk about green woodworking tools and techniques?
Nice equipment. Good for you. Congrats. Probably brings a smile to your face each time you pick it up.
