I’m getting ready to invest in a number of new marking and measuring tools like marketing/cutting gauges, marking wheels, marking knives. I’ve done a lot of research on different brands and am looking for opinions on the best/most accurate brands to buy.

Lee Valley,Bridge Tools, Starrett, General. All good brands, but it's more important to be able to spot quality than brand name.
One you probably haven't seen, a double ended setup square.
Pat,
I know from your books that you make some beautiful and very accurate jigs and furniture, but how and when would this one be used?
Will we see it in an upcoming article or book?

Thank you for your support.
Indeed, the function of my double ended square may not jump out at you. See this link for the whole picture.
The bugger is tough to make and requires some expensive metrology tools to calibrate. Will probably never see the likes of any publisher.
Nice looking tool. I would like to see a shot of the bottom. I am assuming it has a small wood lip hanging down (like a speed square)?
It does have a shoulder to rest against the stock; 1/4" x length of tool.

Could you post your web-site. I lost my note-book. I need a base-plate for a DW 621. Yours looks good!

I have a starrett combination square that is about as accurate as it gets for something adjustable. I also have the new marking guage from lee valley, but am a little dissapointed. For one the primary locking mechanism doesn't hold really well, and two, the screw that holds the cutter likes to come loose. Aside from that, I don't have but would like if money were no object either a guage from bridge city toolworks, or one from Colen Clenton. Both look to be well built.
chuckles,
Don't know where you located...but...April 23.24 in Nashua, NH the antique tool auction. I bought a three piece Starretts last fall..$25.

Ditto jackplane with a word of caution. I would not throw the over-all quality of a brand name into one basket and skip to Grandma's house. I would judge the individual tool piece by piece. Every company, regardless of their over-all quality has some hits and misses. Just like major power tools, some are top notch and some come up a wee bit short.
It will take a lot more home-work, but IMO will be worth the time in the "big-picture".
Good Luck...

Boy, howdy, Sarge!
A classmate has a Starret tape measure that's far from accurate; a rude surprise to many of us accustomed to believe in the perfection of all things Starret.
As we used to say in my previous career, "First you test 'em, then you trust 'em"

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.
I just got these two Starrett combo squares from http://www.mscdirect.com
Great prices, service and super fast delivery. I'd be surprised if you can find a better price, and if any readers do know; please pass along the info!
Also, I keep a list of toys- oops, tools that I want and a check against my big list of online tool urls every few weeks to see what is on sale.
Ebay can be a great source for Bridge City and other stuff.

My favorite marking knife is the Veritas double bevel, about $20. Can be used right or left handed, roght side or left side, flat on the bottom of the blade so it won't drift in the grain as badly as a knife beveled on both sides. Sure love that little tool.
