I just built a few 12″x6’ish doors to put on the storage cabinets I’ve built for the shop….flat panel with mortice and tenon rails and stiles. Now I have to take everything apart to cut the 1/4″ dados, slide in the panels and glue up. What do you use to mark the pieces so the right stile goes to the right rail, etc. ? When I use a pen or pencil clean-up is a pain. Chalk would not be satisfactory..too many parts, relatively small, easly wiped off, etc. I guess I could restrict my pen marks to the tenon and the unseen part of the mortice? What do you folks do? Thanks

"What do you folks do?"
Just as you said, "restrict my pen marks to the tenon and the unseen part of the mortice."

Thanks Norm
I do the same "restrict my pen marks to the tenon and the unseen part of the mortice". I use a Sharpie so the mark is not easily erased.

For temporary marking of parts to reassemble like you described, I use the colored marking dots available at stationary and office supply stores. They come in 1/4" and 1/2" diameters in peel off sheets, about 6 or so colors to a sheet. The 1/2" sizes are large enough to pencil numbers or arrows on if you need to. GP
GP, thanks
I actually routed out all the stiles and rails for the doors last night. With each door, I realized the need for marking became less because less information was required to get each piece back into its proper orientation. So with the first door on each piece I'm denoting face side, top or bottom, left or right....by the third door just a dot with the pen on the inside face of the mortice denotes face and left and right, top or bottom..and a number on the tenon clarifies position. Of course, this only worked because I did one door at a time. Your suggestion would have been especially helpful if I did all the pieces at once and then reassembeled...
