I am looking for a book on marquetry that will give me some design patterns to work with. I am not new to woodworking and have done stringing, inlay, veneering, and even tackled making Federal Inlay Medallions for some of my projects. But “A man must know his limitations”…Dirty Harry and mine are in the artistic field. If I had some bird and flower patterns to learn, I am sure I could venture out. I have found several books online but as you know there are good and bad publications. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good publication?

The Art and Practice of Marquetry by W.A Lincoln is a pretty good book on making marquetry. As far as patterns, motifs etc. there are many books available and some art stores will carry reference books with nothing but flower patterns of birds ,butterflys, or classical designs, Islamic designs. Whole books with just hummingbirds! Almost anything you can think of. Art books in general will give you many ideas. I have a book of Currier and Ives prints. Primitive Central American design patterns and a bunch more that ive collected over years. Books specifically created for marquetry is a limited audience but for artists and designers the selection is endless. I not long ago ran into coloring books for adults. One on Egrets, another one was a color it in Matisse book, believe it or not! Nature books in general , particularly ones for identifying things, like plants, with hand drawn drawings.
I ordered "The Art and Practice of Marquetry" and am waiting for it to arrive. And I didn't know there were coloring books for adults too! That sounds fun. I'm a total newbie. Could you recommend any other super beginner-friendly books or resources?
When search for adult coloring books, make sure you enter "coloring books for adults". If you enter "adult coloring books" you might well be surprised at what you get. Or not, I don't judge.
Also check out Craig Vandell Stevens' book The Art of Marquetry. Very nice.
