I’m using hardboard on the top surface of my workbench [1/4th inch thick] and would like to apply a clear finish to protect it and improve durability. Without it the bench dog holes are starting to fray, etc. What type of finish would serve me well? Appearance is not too critical, and I don’t want to have the coating swell the hardboard material. Primarily looking for protection.
Is shellac the answer? Should I stay away from water based poly?
Thanks.

Pretty much anything will work fine.
I would try both the shellac and WB poly on a scrap, and see which look you prefer. I suspect the WB will give you a lighter final color than the shellac.
