The piece in question is very faded and quite yellow. After spraying red oak samples the color is too orange and much too dark. The grain on the furniture I’m trying to match is flat sawn and very regular. I think white oak ply. is usualy quarter sawn. Any advice would be appreciated.

Craig,
I once built some cherry cabinets for a client that wanted them to match their 20+ year old, 4" thick solid cherry mantle. To make a long story short, it took me a solid week to finally come up with the right match by trial and error with various combinations of stain. The two things I learned was patience and never get involved in that type of project again. I know this doesn't give you an easy solution, you just have to experiment. FWIW.
