Hi,
I’m new to the forum and was hoping an experienced router user can help me get a headstart on a small project.
I need to replicate as closely as possible the profile of some oak mantle trim in our century old home. I have no idea if this is a common/standard profile or a custom one-off but after looking at dozens of bits/profiles I’m no closer to determing what bit or bits I may need, or if it’s even possible to replicate. So needless to say any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Todd

Bed molding. https://www.mr-moulding-knives.com/moulding-catalog/bed-moulding
I would cut a shallow rabbet under the top and get a roundover bit to complete the top part. Then use a cove bit on a separate piece and apply that to the bottom part.
This moulding is made in two parts.
You have a piece on the top which has a bead routed onto it, probably 25mm and you have a piece on the bottom with a cove routed into it - probably 18mm.
They are routed separately then glued together.
Stumpy has done a few like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idtCKP_KK5A
It is also possible to cut this in a single pass with a powerful shaper but that's getting into the weeds a bit and it was almost certainly done the way I have said.
That was very helpful. You have helped point me in the right direction which is a far cry from where I started.
Thank you.
Lots of ways to do it. If you can't find bed moulding in the proper wood species, you can make it up in 3 layers.
