I need to build some cabinets for my garage. I want to get all of the things we store out there organized and put up. With the colors I have used in the garage I need the cabinets to be black. I thought about painted MDF, but I’m not sure how well they would hold up in the garage. Painted plywood is also a consideration, but the grain will show through. MDF is definitely the cheapest way to go and my budget is very limited. I looked into Things like MDO and a polymer sheet good called Starboard, but they are either difficult to source, too expensive or both. Any suggestions? The plan is still in the early stages, but for what it’s worth, there will be two or three tall cabinets (8′ tall x 36″ wide), two or three (or more?) wall hung cabinets of various sizes and a bench. The tall cabinets will also be wall mounted as I have exposed brick and a ledge on the inside of the garage wall. They will be approximately 12″ off the finished floor. Thanks for your suggestions.

For this application I would recommend black melamine coated MDF sheet stock, with solid wood face frames. Designed correctly, it will be more than strong enough. And, the solid wood face frames will do a goo job of absorbing the inevitable impacts.
