Hello All,
My name is Brian Williams. I am a novice woodworker. I have a few cutting boards, frames, a table and a bunch of shop cabinetry under my belt. I am now tackling my first “fine furniture piece”; a cradle for my first born. I have followed Mr Jacques Berger’s “heart-shaped dovetails” cradle design (but tweaked it a bit).
I find myself in the end stages, and with a July due date, I realized… dang, I need a mattress to put in this thing.
Can anyone recommend what I should do? Do I contact my local store, or what?
Thanks!
Brian

Brian, I've never seen a cradle with a mattress in it, but maybe someone makes such a thing. We always just used blankets as a base.
Brian,
Aren't you too busy doing the evening news to be building a cradle?
Have a look at these document from the Consumer Products Safety Commission on safety tips:

To answer your question, purchasing a commercially made cradle mattress and adjusting your cradle dimensions to fit is your best bet.

Call an upholstery shop, it's just a seat cushion basically.

Hey Brian,
I made a custom bassinet for a freind of mine. Went online and ordered a custom mattress to fit the bassinet. It was about $50.00 with shipping. Turned out great.

I live in Calgary, Alberta and went to a local mattress manufacturer who made a 2" thick foam mattress to the dimensions I required.

Hi, what I do is go to my local upholstery shop and he sells me foam suitable for mattresses. Then I go to the local fabric shop and they sell me cloth that has a soft textured side and a moisture proof side and make the cover so that it can be removed for cleaning.
I made a full sized crib for my newborn (not that she used it much), complete with $200 organic matress. For a cradel I would think that one or two blankes of choice would be better. It's not like they're jumping up and down on it. Does a foam provide more safety from fire or suffocation? Really don't know. But I would wonder what's in it, if not organic.

We’ve always put a mattress in a cradle. I’ve never heard that some use blankets as a base. So, the last mattress we bought for our baby was Moonlight Slumber MCBluebird. It comes with a removable cover, which is made of cotton, so you can easily wash it. It’s hypoallergenic, memory-foam, stain and water-resistant.
