Hello all,
I have decided to build my self a slot mortiser similar to the one in the “Shop-made Slot Mortiser” article and after some looking around I’ve decided to use end mill bits instead of standard upcut router bits. I was curious to see if anyone has experience with a maximum lenght of mill to use in a router. I have found some extra-long models and the 2″-3″ of flute seems like a bonus but I wonder if a 4″-6″ mill bit might be far too long for a router mounted horizontally. The router I will be using for the mortiser is a DW 616 at 1.75 hp.
Any thoughts are much appreciated. Thank you.

Not very long
I couldn't tell you what the max end mill length for performance & safety is on that router, but I can guarantee you it is a lot closer to 2" than 6". A spiral end mill is going to have a lot more cutter biting the wood at one time than a standard 2 wing router bit and will put more load on the collet, bearings, etc than a standard bit of comperable size.
