I would like to use MDF for a painted top on a project that may at times have water sitting on it in small amounts, but might sit there several hours. Is there a clear finish that will seal it so the water won’t hurt it. I originally tried S-W prep rite primer then sanded the edges to give a worn look (exposing new mat.) then used a spray can of water based clear poly. Any more suggestions would be appreciated.

No you will definately have BIG problems. Look for the new waterproof MDF products. They are more than double the price, but will definately last. Extera and Medex are two I know of, my spelling could be wrong though. Also look at MDO, which is a type of plywood.
Pardon my spelling,
Mike
Make sure that your next project is beyond your skill and requires tools you don't have. You won't regret it.
I have never seen the MDF products you mention. Although to double the cost of materials would make me no longer competitive cost wise. So I guess that's a different problem. THANKS
Mike's right on. Try Medex. Used it for paint grade window sills when I used to do finish carpentry. If it's well sealed it should do OK. But don't make a bar top out of it.

A well done paint job should stand up to a little spilled water now and then. Most paint doesn't need any additional top coat, it may cause problems. A polyurethane enamel will have good water resistance and also mar resistance. Follow the manufacturers instructions.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
