MDF is an excellent choice of material for the panels in painted frame-and-panel door construction because it's more stable than solid wood, it machines beautifully, and it costs less. Prime it with a shellac or oil-based primer and top coat with the paint of your choice (I prefer to use an oil-based semi-gloss or satin-finish enamel for painted cabinetwork).
