Any tricks to make small quantities (1 quart) of 2 or 4 lb cuts of shellac, without having to get a chemists’ scale to actually weigh out the ounces of flakes? The alcohol part is easy Thanks.

I use a cheap postal scale (1 lb capacity) which I find is quick-n-easy. I've noticed inconsistant flake sizes (some containers have flakier flakes than others) which might make a volume measurement less accurate if you are trying hard to reproduce a particular cut.
As a point of interest, I can detect a slight difference between a 1 lb & 1.5 lb cut when brushing but anything finer is hard to discern.
*I get the ground glue crystals and measure them out pretty much equally to the same volume of water. Works great for me. If the job calls for thinner glue I add a little water and reheat. If it needs to be thicker then I have to soak a few more crystals and add them. Usually the fifty-fifty mix works out well for me.
