Well, I had the chance to de-crate and fire up the new 12″ jointer. Here are a few pics. I only had time to run a little QS Cherry and it cuts very well. I had to make a 13′ extension to get power to it. Anyway, I’m traveling on business the rest of the week, so I plan on putting it through its paces when I get back and posting a review next week. It sure beats the heck out of the little 6″ I had.

WOW... what type wood did they use for that packaging? It's looks fantastic! And how many were killed in that wreck that came out of the package? ha.. ha... ha..ha..ha..
Just kiddin' of course, Bones. Looks great and I'm sure after the 6" it feels great... and when you use it in the future will perform great. You should be proud as you appear to be. Good decision my man.
Regards for many happy hours of planing ahead...
Sarge..
I was impressed with the packaging as well. Steel palet and half inch ply, and who ever the chineese guy was that nailed it together, did not spare the nails! Thank God I still had the old cat's paw to rip it apart with. Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. NICE!!!!!
12" wow That is what dreams are made of
Did you go all the way and get the spiral blade??
How did you talk Mama in to letting you spend that much.
Thanks. I did not get the spiral to start. It was a little stretch past my budget just to move up from the 8" to the 12", but the 8" was out of stock, so I said what the heck. I plan on an upgrade to the byrd head next year after bonus if I do at all. The dang thing cuts like butter. I'm sure the first time I have to set those four blades, I may have a different opinion. One thing's for sure, It won't get lost in the shop. As to the wife, not a peep other than enjoy! Twenty three years and counting, what a lady. Bones,
I got the G609 last Christmas. The only problem I have had was the belts stretching out very quickly. I have changed to the link belts. Now the jointer has greater power transfer and runs more quiet. I wish that I had changed the belts out sooner. Just a thought. Enjoy
Thanks for the heads up about the belts. I'll keep an eye on them. Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
Wow, that baby shipped quick! I'm glad to see you rented the hoist - they are a great way to unload heavy things!
I ordered on Thursday and received a shipping notice via e-mail on sunday. Tuesday got the call from Overnight. It was funny that the delivery guy asked me was this Grizzly stuff good and what was it. I said why, and he said they get a full tractor trailor of Griz machinery into their depot every night and that a huge chunk of his deliveries were Grizzly. Wow! It's better to give than to receive, so will you be re-crating and shipping this baby out soon?

I want one SOOOOOOO bad!!!
Brian
So what was the crate made of? Isn't that weird. Just like little kids at Christmas, the wrapping paper is sometimes more exciting then whats inside! Or NOT!!!

I scrimped and saved for a looooong time. If you get one you will be thrilled! The crate was made of 1/2" ply (or something close in metric) and the base of the crate (what the 609 sat on) was 3/4 bolted to a steel tube pallet. A pallet jack is required. I paid the extra $30.00 for hydraulic tailgate delivery. It is essential. At a half ton, you won't move it with out help.

I may be getting ahead of myself on this one. I really really want one but I plan on retiring at a location on the east coast (i'm in Calif now) in ten years. Question is do I get this big honker now and then pay to have it shipped east($$$) or sell it. Or maybe move up to an 8" now and sell it when I retire and get the big boy back east? I'm sooo confused! Torn between Need, Want and common sense.
Only thing I know for sure is I have got to move up from the Jet 6".
Brian
Ifn ya need a bigger jointer, buy it. In all likelyhood they ain't gonna get any cheaper. Ya got 10 years to decide whether to bring it with ya or sell it and replace. KISS!

Oh man...just when I had had talked myself down to an 8"!!! You're right tho. Ten years is a long time........Hmmmmmmmmmmm.
Bones, I have another question for you...
Did you have to supply your own pallet jack? I'm assuming the truck driver had a pallet jack on the truck to get the jointer to the lift gate, but how did it work after that?
Seems like I've read that some drivers will only set the package off the lift gate while others will actually place it in the garage.
I'm already going to rent a hoist, so I'm wondering if I need to rent a pallet jack also.
Thanks

I paid for lift gate service and they supplied the pallet jack. Mine came ups freight. He pulled it off to the gate dropped it to the road in front of my house and I helped push it up the slight incline into my garage. There is no way the driver could budge the crate without a pallet jack. It weighs a half ton. I rented the engine hoist. Only bummer part was I had it for about an hour and they only rented by the day. I'm using the steel pallet it came on as my wood holder. the ply that was the crate I burned. Use the bill me later. They gave me a $15 discount and I just paid the bill this week and I got it in December. I paid in the 90 days so no interest. I kept the money in the bank and earned a few dollars in interest. Still loving it. I'll be out in the shop tomorrow moring bright n early getting back at it. Take care.

Thanks for the reply. I just want to have my ducks in a row prior to placing the order. And a big thanks for the heads up about the Net 90 Terms on the invoice. I'm all about letting my cash sit around and earn a little interest. However, I'm actually going kick it up a notch and use my new AMEX Blue Cash card (assuming Grizz accepts AMEX) because I got a promotional 0% apr until September of this year.
Thanks again for the help.
Sounds good. I put everything on my discover that I can. I average about 20 bucks back ever couple months in cash back bonus. The trick is of course to pay it off just prior to due date so you don't pay any interest. That maximises cash flow. Love it. Bones, congrats on your new jointer. I have my eye on the same model for my basement shop.
Here is my potential problem: The only access to my basement shop is via a 32" door from the garage. Width wise, would this jointer roll through a 32" door on a mobile base?

Let me check tonight and I'll let you know. I don't think that's an issue. The issue you would have is the weight! It's right at a 1000 pounds. You could ease it down the steps possibly with a come-along, but you'd better plan on help. Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. I would greatly appreciate you checking for me. No worries about weight. My 2 car garage is on the same level as the basement. There isn't even a curb or threshold of any kind at the 32" door going from the garage to the basement.I would need to pay for the liftgate service and have the driver put it in my garage with a pallet jack. From there it will be smooth sailing on a mobile base if it will fit through a 32" door.Did you rent or buy an engine hoist to lift it off the pallet? HF has an engine hoist that I have thought about picking up on sale...
I'd suggest renting one. Likely, it would only cost $30 bucks for one of the really big ones. To buy one, even used, would be $100 or more. I borrowed my dad's... so it was free... but I would have rented a large tow-behind model if the free one wasn't available.

Ok, I checked and it is 25" wide without the fence. It will arrive on a steel crate packed inside a plywood. The fence assemply will be seperate. It's not light either. I would rent the hoist unless you will have the need for engine work, or you just have lots of space. I looked at buying one at harbor freight, but it did not make sense for me. I rented one for 40 bucks. I will make one suggestion. You need straps to lift it. The rental place wanted a lot of money for straps because they did not rent those. I had a simple solution. Went to harbor freight and bought two 2000 lbs rated tiedowns. Worked like a charm and they were $5 a piece. Anyway good luck. You will enjoy it. You did not mention what you were upgrading from, but for me going from a 6" to 12" was like night & day. Take care.

Thanks for measuring and thanks to you and Tbagn for the advice. Regarding renting vs buying a hoist, I'll just have to mull that over I guess. I have a couple of old radial arm saws that are a bear to move if necessary, so the hoist may come in handy once in a while, plus space is not an issue for me. I have developed quite a penchant for old woodworking machinery, so it may come in handy in that arena as well. Thanks again for your help. By the way, I'm not upgrading, this will be my first jointer. The way I figure it, I will just save myself money if I go ahead and get the 12" now, rather than buy smaller and wish I had gone bigger.
