After two coats of lacquer I rubbed with compound and cut right through the lacquer, then waxed. I’d like to re-do and wonder if I can clean, coat with shellac to seal then urethane. Will this work? Is there a better solution. Would appreciate and e-mail. [email protected].
Thanks

First, plain, old mineral spirits will remove the wax. Just change your cloth frequently.
Now you can either build up additional coats of lacquer or change to varnish. If you elect to continue with the lacquer you can apply it directly to the existing lacquer as lacquer will bond with the prior coats. If you want to go to vanish (poly) sand the lacquer with 220 sandpaper to establish a "tooth". Poly has poor adhesive qualities and you must prepare the lacquer surface. If you are going to "finish the finish" be sure to apply enough coats of either lacquer or poly so you have something to work with.
I do not recommend shellac. Shellac contain wax and due to the poly's poor adhesion, you can run into problems.
