There’s a common plastic extrusion which is used to make a file drawer. The cross section looks pretty much like a lower-case h. It clips on the top of the drawer slides, and the ears of standard hanging files rest on it. Unfortunately the plastic ones acquire little dents so folders don’t slide easily, and worse, they look cheesy. I’d like to find a similar product made of metal. Anybody know of a source?

No source because I usually make my own. I use 1" wide aluminum flat bar. Screw it directly to the drawer sides letting half of it extend above the drawer. The file hanger tabs will fit above the drawer sides. Very clean looking.
Sounds good. I'm going to have to make a file drawer soon. Do you ever rabbet the bar in just a bit so the screws aren't carrying all the load?
No. I use about the same number of screws that a typical heavy-duty drawer slide uses.
Hi,
There is a company called Sealeze who makes industrial brushes. They have several "h" profiles (in aluminum) used to mount strip brushes.
Have a look:

Hope it helps!

Buxton,
My shop is doing a job right now with over 60 file drawers, and I have looked everywhere for a higher quality item than the plastic you describe. I haven't found it yet. I considered the flat aluminum piece extending upwards, but it is less elegant, and it necessitates an edge treatment for the top of the drawer sides (in the present case they are ply w/ oak veneer). For lack of an alternative, we are going with the black plastic "h" from Rockler. If you find a solution I'd love to hear it.

Maybe here's one!

Buxton,
It looks perfect to me; thanks for the link. Too late for my current project, but I will definitely try them next time around.

My we have different values! I simply don't understand how brushed aluminum fastened with countersunk flat-head screws (or even round-head if you prefer) is less elegant than a plastic piece that hides an unfinished drawer side.
Hi Buxton ,
When I make the suspended file systems I go to the local steel yard and use 1/8" thick by about 1/2" or 5/8" tall . I cut a saw kerf into the drawer box parts before assembly usually . Also there are some clips that fit over the 1/2" ply and go down inside of the box so the file tabs clear the above face .
good luck dusty
