Metod is that you with the high bid on the lie-nielsen 4 1/2 bronze plane on ebay? If so I will refrain from bidding against a fellow knot head!

I agree with you about buying LN's on ebay. Veritas is getting there too. Makes me wonder who's bidding and why the price goes so high when you can call LN and get brand new cheaper, especially shipping. I built a nice set of user Stanley's by carefully shopping on ebay. I read what Patrick Leach said on his site about bedrocks being overrated. I put a Hock blade in my Stanley #7--early one--great heavy casting, and she sings! Don't have any experience with a bedrock, but for what they usually go for, I'd rather spend a few bucks more for the LN. Tom
Not sure if this is a factor but maybe some of the bidders on e-bay are overseas and maybe they can avoid some value added taxes that they would pay for new tools. Not sure if this is the case but that is the only reason I could see for paying what people pay on e-ay for Lie Neilsen stuff. Have funTroy
Metod, cross the thought of the LN 5 from your mind and look at the 5 1/2 with the york frog. I have a bag full of cliftons 3,4 1/2, 5 6.7 and a box full of bedrocks 5.6,7,8 but I went for the LN 5 1/2 yorkie as my go to plane for the nasty nasty grain hard woods due to it's weight. Heavier than clifton and I don't dance so fast any more at my age and I need all the help I can get. Ha.
In the past 6 years or so I was fortunate enough to see several internet houses get into clifton and then blow them out as the high price point didnt sell well in their mass market. How about a clifton #7 for $187 +s&h a good deal eh? That was the highest # and at the same time I picked up the bed rocks for no more than $200 on E bay but very selectively. My 608 doesn't have the "period" cap but it's a proper Stanley cap for #8, my upgrade iron and cb don't care --it humms right along. I guess I am a bit like you the serial # is worthless if it doesen't do the job. Enjoy, Pat
Hey Metod,
Sorry to hear you were outbid. I have that happen all the time, but I got smart and use auction sniper for most of my bidding, It bids 5 seconds before the close of the auction. Unless someone drives the price way up ahead of time, it has helped my winning tremdously. Besides, I have dial up and I couldn't bid anywhere near the last few seconds of an auction.
I noticed the same thing about the ending prices of the lie-nielsens - they go for more than you can get them at woodcraft or lie-nielsen's site. I heard a rumor about a year ago that he was coming out with a bronze 4 1/2, ( I had been wanting a 4 1/2 because of the 50 degree frog, so I figured I would wait and see if the bronze version showed up) I didn't even realize they were out until I saw the auction this morning. The seller isn't very smart telling everyone you can still get one from L-N. I will be placing my order tomorrow - the web site says ship date is late november - just in time for my birthday!
I'm with you - the low # means nothing to me, that puppy will be out of the box making shavings the minute I get my hands on it. I already started picking out some wood with really gnarly grain so I can put it through the motions and see what it can do.
Good luck with your bidding as well, maybe we'll cross paths on an auction - my ebay id is birdseyemaniac.
By the way, if you're into infills, here's my latest ebay aquisition- it's unmarked so I'm not sure of the maker. It needs a little cleaning, but should make a fine user:

SD,
I certainly hope so. It was half of what the spiers are going for regularly. I'll check into that. By the way, been meaning to ask (probably a dumb question) what does sgian dubh mean?
