I have a piece of 3″ x 10″ x 8′ rough white oak that I want to use as a mantel.
I want to mill it but don’t think my DW723 planer would have the power needed.
It must weigh well over 100 lbs.
Any ideas or should I just use a hand plane?
Thanks

milling large beam
I'd think that you should be able to make multiple very light passes with your planer. Time consuming, but probably faster than a hand plane. Since you won't have a flat surface on one the bottom side to start with, I'd recommend marrying it to a straight 2X10 or 2X12 to start with, inserting shims between the two as required. And of course you'll need to support the material on both input and output sides of the planer, and someone to help manhandle the oak as well would be beneficial.
Router rails
Another way to do it would be to get a large dish cutting bit & use your router and some rails to do it.
