I’m finishing a poplar cart with 100% pure tung oil and, so far, have put on four coats. It’s been four days and I’m waiting for the fourth coat to dry. Each coat consisted of a mixture of 50% tung oil and 50% mineral spirits. I want to add at least one more coat. Can I omit the mineral spirits on future coats, or do I have to continue using the mineral spirits? It’s my understanding that the purpose of the mineral spirits is to help the oil absorb into the wood. However, now that the wood seems saturated with the oil, I would think I can omit the spirits. I would appreciate any opinions on this.

you can skip the spirits, but let the oil that is there dry for a another day first. then, let the last coat sit for four or five days under optimum conditions to fully cure. also, make sure to go back and wipe off any bleeding as needed.
