Can you bleach out, partially or completely, mineral stains in maple? Thought I was getting white (clear) 5/4 hard maple for bed rails until I planned it down. Normally small streaks don’t bother me but these are fairly noticable and will probably detract from the overall appearance. I an using a poly/varnish wipe-on (Maloofs) so a matching dye is not an option. Thanks for your advise.

Those stains are probably not mineral stains. Much maple aquires gray colored streaks and areas during the drying process. They can not be readily removed. You can sometimes be successful using a two part A/B wood bleach that is designed to remove natural color from wood. Chlorine bleach and oxalic acid generally are ineffective for these types of stains.
You can get A/B bleach at good paint stores or hardware stores.
Howie,
These are varying shades of brown, some fairly deep in tone. Thanks for the A/B reference. That is new to me. If I can find it I will give it a try on some scrap.
