I am in the process of finishing one of my first woodworking projects. It is a small desk for my daughter who is on vacation in Spain with the rest of my extended family. I had to stay back and work but I did have enough free time to complete this desk (sits about 1 foot off the floor and it has folding legs that I purchased). I am going to surprise her with it upon her return tomorrow. Anyway, I have applied 3 coats of MinWax wipe-on poly and it looks OK but I’m going to apply a couple more coats. Is there anything I should apply after that or should that be sufficient? Thanks.

I would lightely sand with 300 grit or higher before you apply the last coats. In addition, after the last coat, rub with a brown paper bag until it is smooth to the touch. Then apply a good paste wax!
Enjoy!

Bill,
Can you suggest a good paste wax? This is my first time finishing anything so I am a true novice in this area.. Thanks...
Regards,

I use Johnson's paste wax. There are a number on the market, Liberon has a nice one which I do not use because my wife does not like the smell! Just don't use a cleaner/wax, get a paste wax.

Bill,
I read somewhere that I should probably wait a week or so before applying the paste wax. Do you concur or do I just have to wait for the last coat to dry? Also, could you explain how to apply the paste wax as I haven't done this before...Regards,

Are you using Gloss, Semi or Satin? It is usually best to use gloss for your first coats and finish with a semi or satin, otherwise the build-up of coats can leave the finish cloudy.

I'm using MinWax Wipe-On Poly. I don't think there is a gloss specified on the can but I don't have the can in front of me...Regards,
