Would appreciate your thoughts on this design for a basic wall shelf. Also, couple of questions: 1. How would you attached the supports, and 2. How would you attach to the wall without showing screws, etc.?

hi chris,
the small corbels in the center, although they look unnecessary, could be fit into stop dados and the center of these dados predrilled and countersunk to hide a mounting-to-wall screw. all of the corbels might be stop dovetail dadoed into the top and simply screwed through the wall side of the back. i have made a few of these mission style wall units. several were done incorporating mirrors in frames. they're fun to make.

What also works is to use metal plates with a keyhole cut-out.
Chop recesses in the back of the shelf, Screw the plates over the recesses. Fix screws into the wall and then slide the shelf into place.
You can make *small* corrections to the levelling by wrapping electrical tape around the screws.
I like both Eef's and Dav's suggestions, and had thought about Dav's beforehand which will allow me to locate the hangers anywhere along the back; thereby hanging the shelf from studs.Chris
One other suggestion:You could try making a "disguised" french cleat. The back of the shelf gets screwed to the wall through holes behind the corbels. Use dowels to reinforce the cleat.
