In the most recent issue of Fine Woodworking are plans for a berry box. The plans all show 1/8″ stock yet the pictures obviously show 1/4″ sides. Mistake or enlarged to show detail??

Pictures all show 1/8", like the plan and the text state. Only the bottom is 1/4".
But I believe there are two other related errors involving dimensions. It says to set blade height to 5/64”, and to make the registration pin 5/64” wide. In each case, should not the correct dimension be 9/64”?
Count the number of fingers at the corners. Too few for 1/8 but just right for 1/4. Also the finger is just the same width as the bottom. Needs a good rewrite.
homedoer, you are somehow miscounting. There are a total of 27 fingers across a width of 3-3/8”, just right for 1/8” fingers. I do agree that the technique used of planing away the offset in the box sides results in a box that is 3-1/4” deep and does not match the drawings. The author may prefer this method of finishing off his boxes, but the need to do any planing could have been avoided if he had cut the fingers in the more conventional way of offsetting the stock pieces before cutting.
OK - - I give you that point I miscounted. Pictures make the sides look thicker though. The finger cross sections look rectangular, not square. Maybe my calibrated eye needs adjustment.
I agree that the sides look to be 1/4". Also agree that the finger cross sections look rectangular. Also, the sides look thicker than the handle. I want to build this, but the more I look at the drawings and phots, the more I think the label of 1/8" thick sides is incorrect. Plus I have real difficulty planing wood to 1/8" with my J/P, and I do not have a thickness sander.
There's no reason you couldn't make your box out of 1/4-inch thick stuff. It's not likely that Mr. Becksvoort or anyone else will give you grief over that. The only change you'd have to make is in the height you set the blade when cutting the box joints.
Homedoer, if your eyes are calibrated to an NIST standard I think you're ok :)
I like DaveRichards' solution. I get nervous around 1/8" stock!
