Mistake with Philip Morley’s Article 301 FWW 60 (Mortising Jig)
I am working through the plans and came upon a mistake. A whole step is left out of the article and illustration and it is quite critical to the functioning of the jig.
The top has dadoes that sit on runners attached to the subtop but there are supposed to be bolts embedded in the subtop that go through the slots of the top. There are knobs to clamp the top to the subtop so the piece to be mortised is properly aligned with the router bit.
The illustration opn page 61 shows these bolts floating in the slots but look at the subtop on the bottom illustration – where are the holes for the bolts?
The illustration does not show where the bolts should be drilled and I can probably figure it out and use the bottom right photo on page 62 as a clue but the illustration and instructions fail to reference this important part of the instrutions. If I could just get the dimensions for the two holes I need to drill it would be great. Not clear if these bolts should be secured into the subtop much like the registration pins are for the spacers (hammer into place with under sized counterbores?) Mr. Morley, a little help here….Editors? Thanks.

I don't have the answer to your question, but this video might help. It does look like a great jig for slip tenons.

Thank you - this gives me more visual clues to use to place the bolts I know they have to be seated so that they are in the center of the grooves that pass over them.
Tom, You're welcome.
I noticed that Phillip Morley sells plans on his website. When you've sorted it out please provide an update to this forum discussion for other FWW members who may be encountering the same problem.
P.S. The Morley Mortiser jig is great for slip tenons or as an economical alternative to a Festool Domino. If you plan to do traditional tenons and you were just interested in the mortiser here is a simple solution from Mike Farrington using a Drill Press with End Mills.
