Is there any advantage to using a miter plane over, say, a low angle jack plane on a shooting board or miter board?
Neil, looking for an excuse to buy yet another plane

weight, knob location, shape of the walls. It's just easier to keep the thing flat and square on your shooting board. It's certainly not mandatory to have one. It's probably more of a luxury.
Are you looking at the M12 or the M20A? I can't imagine that you'll be happy with just one of the Marcous.
I have to confess that I have dreamed of an M12 as well as some of the other hand mades...and I do have that maddening personality trait of always looking ahead to the next thing...however economics dictates a certain restraint (damn).....I gues for now I'll stay with the Veritas...

I thought that a miter plane was just a luxury item, until I bought one. I now know what all the fuss is about. A miter plane is designed for shooting, and is alot more comfortable to use because of its design. It also has more mass, which is very helpful.
If you're gonna shoot 2 or 3 miters, any plane will do. If you start using a shooting board all the time, then you will thank the day you get a miter plane, if even just for the comfortable hand position it offers.
I have cabinet jobs where I'm making many mitered doors, and for me, it's alot easier and nicer with the miter plane.

Thanks Jeff,
I guess I'll have to start making miters as part of my daily routine, then I'll really be able to justify a new plane.

I certainly don't think you need to wait until it's an everyday occurence. Shooting miters improves them 10 fold, so if you want your projects to fit better, than you should invest in a miter plane. Just my .02.

A miter plane will make this work much, much better :) there I think you should by one right away. I think LN makes a nice one and Hotley does as well.
There you are in big trouble now.
Troy
Yes Troy you are quite correct: LN does a most acceptable one, so does Uncle Kral Hotley, and also Mr Magoo (;)Philip Marcou
phillip,
Mr. Magoo makes planes?
Byyyy George Magoo, I think you've got it!

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
Magoo's planes often suffer from a faulty magneto.
Ray
Well, I'm already in big trouble due to a recent plane purchase and the surrounding fury,,,and I haven't invented a creative story to explain to my lovely bride why I needed that plane....I'll probably have to put the miter plane on hold ...although I may check into this Magoo guy.
Neil
I always blame the plane fairy :) oh well you have to do what you have to do. I don't have a miter plane but you have me thinking that I might need one now. Troy
