Hey everybody, newbie woodworker here. Today I was building a bench and I came across a problem that I couldn’t figure out. For the back rest, I had to miter some 2x4s so that their edge would be flush to the top of the backrest and their other edge would be screwed into the frame. I tried to figure out the angle that was needed and how far from the edge to start mitering. I tried to figure it out by holding one one 2×4 against the top of the back rest and used my speed square to measure the angle from the intersection, it didn’t work. I need help.

Without more information, it is very difficult to know what the problem is.
Why not try a sketch of the piece you are trying to create then take a photo of it. If you got the plans online then a link would really help.
Mitres can be hard. If you only need to mitre one end of a piece, it is usually best to cut the mitre first, then measure from the cut tip or heel. That way you will know exactly where to put a straight cut.

That's the website for the bench. Thank you for your help.
I looked at a few of those benches, and I don't see a miter on any of tgem. They all seem to be 90 degree cuts.
The angle on top is equal to the angle on the base.
