How long are the legs you are dealing with and when you say spline do you mean a spline across the face of the two boards (showing) or a spline inserted in a cut that is perpendicular to the miters, hidden inside the joint for all or most of the length of the legs/miter joint?

Yes glue blocks or an internal spline are both good answers. I can't think of another unless the legs are quite long. Spline for the smaller parts on smaller items, glue blocks for quite heavy pieces. Make sure each piece has grain 90 degrees to the next in your glue block for the most strength.
