I looking to purchase a 12″ compound miter saw. I’ve noticed the DeWalt and Porter Cable for around $300. I plan on using it for deck building to fine woodworking. Any suggestions or preferences? What’s the deal with the laser? Is it a gimmick? thanks!

I picked up the Bosch 12" on ebay for 312.00 delivered. I like it but it is a bit of a brute for hauling around all the time. Not bad if you mount it on a portable stand. The quality, fit and finish are excellent and it cuts extremely well. Mine was dead on out of the box. One of the features I enjoy the most is the left or right handed safety releases. I think its a real safety aid since you never find youself accidently reaching accross the blade. You just need to remember that the 12" has a 1" arbor so you'll be buying blades for it specifically if the majority of your tools have 5/8" arbors.

I bought the DeWalt a couple of years back to build a shop. I decided on the Dewalt based on similar discussions at the Fine Homebuilding site. You might check there. I'm very happy with the saw. The switch began sticking closed after I left it outside for a few weeks (under cover) but has freed up since being in the shop. It is dead-on accurate and very easy to use.
I've had the Porter-Cable for about a year with heavy use and no problems. Quick and easy set up, heavy, good for stationary use.
Hey Mark,
I tried the laser attatchment and wasn't totally impressed. It will locate the "area" of the cut or kerf, but the laser line itself is too hazy for fine measurements like 1/16's. Sometimes it seemed that the laser line was straining my eyes also. Neat gizmo, you have to admit. Looks cool, but you may find yourself relying on your eyes as usual.
