I’ve been looking for a sliding miter saw for stationary use in my shop. The Hitachi C12LSH is appealing because its rails are fixed and the saw slides forward on them therefore requiring less clearance behind the saw. I’d like to mount the saw fairly close to the wall and will have a dust collection hood behind it. Does anyone have an opinion on this saw or recommend another one?

I have a Makita 10" SCMS (1013?)... given the chance to buy it again I think the only thing I would change is to get the 12". I have nothing to add about the Hitachi, understand them to be good saws, but I am very pleased with the Makita.
I think it's a toss up between makita and Hitachi; pick one based on the features you like.
Normally, a 10" is sufficient for shop use. But the side mounted rails on the 12" Hitachi makes it, I think, the only saw in this class with that feature. So if back wall clearance is important, that may be the deciding factor for you.
