I am a novice woodworker and am considering the purchase of a mitre saw. So far the Dewalt 706 seems like the best choice based on trade reviews I have read. Any feedback or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I have the 706 and am very pleased with it. I also looked at the 708, but I don't need a slider, plus I'm still skeptical about the stability of a slider when doing accurate miter joints. I've done quite a few mitered frames for table tops since getting the 706 and it has held its accuracy from the initial setup.
Good luck!

I've got the Dewalt as well and have been very pleased. It stays square through much abuse. I have used it for cutting 2x6 framing and then back to the workshop it goes with a good blade for finer work.
Should have added to my earlier post. The blade that came with my 706 is a general purpose, fine kerf blade. It was OK on 90* cuts but seemed to twist a little on 45* miters. I replaced it with a beefy 80-tooth crosscut blade that works great.Bill Arnold - Custom Woodcrafting

I have a dewalt 706. Solid saw. Nice upright cutting capacity. Accurate when aligned correctly (like any saw). I have recently purchased the bosch 4412 due to growing needs. But I will still have my dewalt handy as it has served me well.
i'm just a DIYer myself and I got the Ridgid 12" Sliding CMS from HD last week. What a sweet saw! its huge, can cut 5.25" base standing up, the controls are great (the laser is crap, but most are), and the standard blade is really impressive. yes, its kinda expensive, but the fact that it can cross cut a 12" wide piece of mdf means worlds to me.
just my $0.02.
good luck,
-mike.
Mike,
Just curious. How does it perform when cutting hardwood at 45* to make a frame?

i haven't cut anything more than mdf and 2x4's so far... i'll post more about it as time goes on...

i own the same saw(ridgid 12" compound slider with laser) and use it daily. i thought the laser was ineffective as well. i then replaced the batteries in the laser,(and made 200 practice cuts to get used to the 1/8 displacement of the laser beam)...now i will not use nay other saw! be advised, ridgid makes a saw stand on wheels which is also excellent.
big al
you can't go wrong with the dewalt 706. i've had it for the past year and it works well, however, i had the pleasure of playing with the bosch compound miter saw the other day and i must say that it wins handsdown as far as convenience because you can easily change the angle positions from the FRONT of the saw as opposed to the dewalt where you have to reach behind and fumble for the knobs.
good luck
Hi. I have three. A porter cable, dewalt and a sliding compound 10" bosch. I really like all three, a lot. But if I would have to pick a favorite of the porter cable and the dewalt (both 12") I would choose the porter cable. it just has a nicer feel. More sturdy. Great presets, very accurate, but honestly, it's just the way it feels to you. Just go with a realy reliable brand. They all do the same job.
