Hi,I am having a problem with a table I am refinishing. After applying a coat of pre-stain conditioner, and a coat of golden oak stain the table top has a blotchy appearance.I know I did not scrape through the venneer.I am wondering if a toner made from the same stain mixed with a poly-urethane would solve this problem. This is something that has never happened to me before.
Thanx

You may not have removed all of the stripper, if that is what you mean by "refinishing"..I would suggest either way that you wash the table very well with mineral spirits and clean rags, and re-stain. Just might do ya. You can tint poly with a stain of the same solvent but you will find it involves a lot of trial and error.
What kind of wood is it (how blotchy)? How are you applying the poly?

The wood appeared to me to be a form of Mahogony venneer. The blotching was pretty bad in some area`s but on other`s it was non existant. The table top has a sort of diamond pattern with a solid edging.I went ahead and applied a self made toner and it looks much better but I have never had this happen to me before.I did not use stripper,I used a cabinet-scraper to remove the old finish.Which appeared to be just shellac, over a dark toner(now I can understand why) then sanded what was left off with 120 grit and a random orbit sander.I also washed the peice down with thinner just to make sure it was clean of any residue.I am beginning to thing the blotching is in the venneer itself and nothing I do will get it perfect short of a solid stain.I am going to apply one more coat of my homemade toner then that`s it,I will start urethaning.Wish me luck.
