I’m currently making a cherry cradle for my niece due this March. I’ve pretty much finished the cradle and am getting ready to make the legs from which the cradle will rock. I have a beautiful piece of 10/4 figured cherry I’ve been anxious to use and was going to use it now for the legs. However, the cradle itself is not figured. So, I was wondering what some thoughts are on mixing the two. Is what I’m doing taboo, or are figured and non-figured wood ok to combine, has anyone done similar projects this way? Any opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Bobby,
The legs will be an incredible accent the piece. Just go for it and then listen to the compliments. You go boy! Mix in the same species is perfect. Grain is everything. Bland is ALL the same.
BobbyJax,
The only thing I'd be concerned about is the strength of the leg...if that's not an issue, no problem.
However, the cradle itself is not figured. So, I was wondering what some thoughts are on mixing the two.
SO WHAT! If it looks nice to YOU (baby will not notice) GO FOR IT!
But I love contrast in woods.. Just me...
Go ahead and mix them. I'm doing the same thing for my next grandchild due in July. I'm using cherry, some of it is figured, some heartwood and a little bit of sapwood. I'm using a gel stain after experimenting with dye stains, tinted shellac, etc.

Not likely to be a problem, since the legs presumably are distinct from the rest of the cradle. Usually a problem occurs with mixing plain and figured wood when the two are mixed up randomly, some figured and some plain door panels or drawer fronts in a cabinet for example.
