i”m finishing a walnut project with custom stain (Trans Tints + water), followed by 2-3 coats of Level Sealer, followed by 2 coats of Krystal gloss. When I spray the first coat of level sealer sometimes I get bubbles on the surface. Sometimes they break sometimes they don’t. Sanding and applying another coat of sealer doesn’t help. I’m also getting tiny white spots (like pin size).
I have to sand down to bare wood to get the bubbles out.
I’ve tried mixing fresh sealer in a fresh container, cleaning the gun squeaky clean to no avail.
What’s up?

I've got no actual experience with this material, but ML Campbell does have information sheets on this product. First, they indicate it is thixotropic with the viscosity thinning itself due to the "shear" of spraying. That suggests that spray technique and adjustments are likely to be critical so the material hits and begins to level while still in the thinned condition, and the spray pressures must be right to generate the desirable thixotropic action.
The data sheet does indicate you can thin the material, although "Reducing the Level Sealer™ will reduce the sag resistance of the product and its ability to build. If reduction is necessary, use M.L. CampbellStandard lacquer thinner C16036 or Care Reducer C1621
I hope someone with direct experience with this or similar products chimed in--all I've done is read the product info sheet.
Will do. I'm going to try brushing on the Level Sealer too. I've never done that with any of their products so I'm curious if it will work or not.
I'll post my results.
Thanks,
Brian
test it without the sealer on scrap. Stain then finish (thinned) to act as a sealer.
In short brushing doesn't work.
I cleaned my gun throughly again. I got a few bubbles but not like before. I'm wondering if the humidity played a part in this?
