I have been looking at lathe tool holders on the web for something that would keep my tools within easy reach while I am turning, I have not seen anything that meets my needs. When turning on my large lathe they end up on the bed behind the tailstock, this is convenient but messy and they can roll around/ fall off, especially when the tailstock has to be moved.
Just recently picking up a Record Herald lathe for small work, my need for something became more acute. I finally sat down and designed my own.
This was my fourth revision. It is two pieces, a base cabinet with drawers below on two inch castors, and a tool rack above.
It is a small footprint, The tools are stored business end up so they can be instantly recognized. The tools are all facing me within reach so no turntable to spin. There is a small work surface for preparing chucks or staging sandpaper etc. Four drawers for storing all the bits and pieces such as centers, chucks and accessories. It can be rolled around anywhere I want.
I thought I would share for those that might find this useful.
The drawings weren’t meant for public consumption but everything is accurate and it can be built from the PDF plans.
The tool holders are made from schedule 40 PVC 1-1/2″ for the bottom 2 rows and 2″ for the top.
The drawers are not shown as I generated the cut list after the base was finished.
