Hi all
I am looking for some ideas for a mobile mitre saw station. I am purchasing a mitre saw and was thinking about buying the stand to go with it. After looking at the stand, it takes up a lot of room and has no end stops. For around the same money I thought I could make a mobile one myself. Space is very restricted so it must be mobile so I can move it to door opening when cutting long lengths.
I am thinking about making a cabinet on wheels with a bit of storage. One thing I am getting stuck on is ideas for the extensions. When they are not in use I want them to fold away but I want them as long as possible. Has anybody out there made anything similar or seen any plans anywhere.
Thanks in advance
Phil.

Hi Datapip,
Check out American Woodworker #82 October 2000, great plans for the ultimate mobil tool stand. Great plan.

Datapip,
I built one a few years ago and use it everyday. I got the idea from the 'Jigs' book...but it's fairly easy to visualize. I made a cabinet that is open in both the front and back ...the sides are higher than the platform that the miter saw sits on (sides are about 3" higher) Attached to the sides are piano hinges that hold 30"x12" melamine panels with a 1 1/2" cleat on the back side. Down the sides of the cabinet are two piano hinges about 24" long...and attached to the piano hinges are two plywood triangles. The triangles swing out to support the melamine planks and they collapse againt the sides of the cabinet when not in use. The plywood triangles have a cut out on top to swing past the melamine plank.
I designed this to accomodate both my planer and miter saw...plus a couple of 4: deep draws that can be opened from either side of the cabinet. When not in use, the planer or miter saw sits on the bottom shelf of the cabinet. I can move it around easily and flip up the support in seconds. The distance between the top platform and the top of the sides was calculated to accomodate the height of the miter saw platform. I had to add 1/4" to the bottom of the planer so that it was flush with the top of the melamine planks.

It doesn't sound like the NYW miter saw station itself would work for you but the folding supports it utilizes could give you some additional ideas. Using barrel hinges, the supports fold in half (the outside half folding behind the inside half). The supports also incorporate a tape measure and have a shop made stop block that can be used.

I'm damn near finished building one for myself. Based it on a couple of pics I found online; for the life of me I canna find the bookmark right now. By the sound of BG's post, mine's pretty similar. It's basically an open fronted box, 24x24x36" high, each extension wing is a 3' ish long flat board with a triangualr brace. The brace is hinged in such a way that when deployed, the upper edge forms the back fence. Stowed, the wings fold flat against the side of the unit. To utalise the capacity of the box, I've filled it with drawers. Nothing fancy, Whole thing took me a week to build working at a very leisurely pace. I'll keep looking for the link and post it.

Thanks for your time Mike would like to see a pic of yours if possible.
Regards Phil.
found it....
I've kept mine pretty basic, right now it's plain unfinished baltic birch ply. Like I said, other than switchin the cupboards for drawers, it's pretty much like this....

Here's the one I built last summer. Its pretty nice and compact when folded up (only about 30 inches wide, and with the wings up you get about 4 ft from either side of the blade supported.
