Mobile planer! Move over, miter saw.
A little while back, I picked up the Rigid miter saw stand when it was on sale for $99. A really nice buy! Got it all put together, rolled it into the shop, looked at the miter saw… then at the planer… started getting ideas.
Had to abandon the shop for quite awhile, too many other things happening, but last night, I finished mounting the planer on the miter stand. Pictures below. Why? you ask….. Well, mainly bought the miter stand for when we do our deck next month, and for other around and about building. Don’t really need extended stock support when it’s in the shop. The planer, however, is a whole different story. Really a pain when planing longer stock. Really a pain to move around, too, and needed to make a mobile base for it. Both problems solved right here!
Below is a pic of when it’s all folded up and tucked against the wall:
And here’s a pic when it’s up and ready for work. The rollers will extend about 30″ (from the table) on both sides.
If anyone has concerns or advice about the suitability of the fasteners, please let me know! Pic below. I usedt 5/16″ machine screws to hold the Baltic Birch ply to the steel stand, lock washers underneath, and good solid washers on top. The planer is held to the plywood with 3/8″ bolts that go through the plywood only. They are counterbored to sit just a half-smidge (gnat’s eyelash) below the surface of the plywood. They go up through the pre-made holes in the planer frame to hold it on.

Jamie, looks like a neat idea. We can't see any cause for concern over strength issues-it is not as if you are planing 20 foot Jatoba baulks. If it quickly/easily interchangeable from one mode to the other that is an added bonus.
Ohmigod, Philip, that picture is hilarious.
My main concerns are with the reliability of the fasteners when the planer is hanging sideways like that, after many months of going up and down and up and down. That's one reason I used Baltic Birch, I figured with more layers it should be stronger.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Philip,
Is that a cat-serole you're cooking?
Sorry, couldn't pass that one up.

Is that how cat-sup is made? I'll make mine ketchup, thanks.Andy"It seemed like a good idea at the time"
philip,
Nice picture. A few seconds less under the broiler, though, or maybe some foil covers, and the ears wouldn't have turned out so dark. Just a suggestion for next time.
Cheers,

Roast bluepoint?
LOL1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
20 foot Jatoba! Geeeee Ya lives in a Rain Forest?
Jamie,
I have been thinking of doing same thing with the rigid stand I took my miter saw off of (I bought AD&E stand.) I wouldn't have thought to use a piece of ply to attach planner to stand. Good idea. Be sure you are watching the outfeed board so it doesn't dip and catch before it goes over roller. When I plane board with my moulding machine, the boards will sometimes catch on sawhorse and push W&H backwards.

who needs to clean her shop and start a kindling barrel for next winter with all of the cutoffs on floor.
H, Marion. I can't remember for sure, but I think mounting the planer directly was going to be a problem because, to get the planer in line with the rollers, I was going to have to put a hole in the no-drill zone. (It's been months since I checked that, so I'm not positive).
Thanks for the reminder about the outfeed site. I'm not quite sure how I ended up with the planer so far to one end of the table. Sometimes I have reasons for doing something that I forget the next day, ROFL. So, I just go ahead and do it.
I think the plywood base will actually make it easier to move the planer off when needed. It was really awkward lining up the planer with those 4 tall bolts when I first mounted it. Darned thing is heavy! To get it off, I only need to loosen the 4 wing-nuts underneath and free the plywood.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
ummmmmm... Jamie.. why do ya wanna taake your planer for walks...?? Somethin I'm misssing here....??

I think a trip to an ornithologist would have them up & flying just fine but if we hear a couple of more hooty hoots out in the trees we'll know who it is.Good, better, best never let it rest until your good is better & your better best.
Seriously, though, I still have so much to do re: efficient use of space in the shop, permanent locations for the tools and permanent piping for the DC. Planer gets shuffled around alot!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
yea.... I hear ya re shuffling.... that was one of the reasons why I switched over to handraulics... wayyyy too much time lost farfin around trying to make room...Mike Wallace

Hi, Bart!! Great minds think alike, eh?? Don'tcha just love that they call it a "Utility Vehicle" LOL?!
Great news here: Nick is retiring really he is. He's on his way home from Oregon as we "speak" and has only to go back for personnel matters next week and he's D-O-N-E. That means we can go over to Whidbey and pester you soon! Or did you change your mind? ROFL!

Mind, mind, mind (looking all around) pause I know that suckers here somewhere. Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most. That sucker is just like the pencil behind my ear it always there but I just can't seem remember where there is.
Retiring the act of being retired. I don't think I'll ever get past tired let alone re-tired so why does he want to get tired all over again? Gees once is enough don'tcha think?
I'll E-mail you my phone# & E-mail address so arraignments can be made for this hysterical visit.

He is ultratired tonight -- on the 9pm boat from Seattle, so due to dock in about 16 minutes. He spent the last 5 days sorting through all his "stuff" at the Oregon apartment, holding a yard sale, schlepping(sp?) stuff to Goodwill, consigment places, etc., etc., etc., etc., packing what was left into boxes and loading up a U-Haul! Poor puppy! I had stocked up on Salmon, basmati/wild rice, and carrot cake (a great combination, BTW) for dinner, but he didn't get away early enough. Salmon tomorrow, but Carrot Cake for the Soul tonight!
I'll watch for your missive.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I am doing the same thing. I only have a one car garage and don't have much room for benchs so I bought the miter stand to use on all my bench tools. What I am doing is making a MDF base for each tool (Miter saw, planer, sanding station, shaper, mini-lathe). I am hanging heavy duty brackets on the wall and each tool will sit on a shelf, when I need it I take it off and clamp it to the stand.
Great idea! If you can, shoot us some pics when it's all done, eh??forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Sorry, I haven't logged on in awhile. I spent last weekend making the mdf bases for my bench tools. I will try and take some pictures this weekend!!!
