It would indeed be a tragedy if the history of the human race proved to be nothing more than the story of an ape playing with a box of matches on a petrol dump. ~David Ormsby Gore

Well, I have heard of doing things by hand. I think that chap is overdoing things there-the man is doing things BY FOOT. He should get on well with Uncle Charles.
phillip,
Gotta love it Eh? What about Napie and Adam? :-) :-)

What you want to bet tools sharpened on that rig can do work just as fine as those sharpened on the latest “super mongo scary sharp jig system with special sandpaper and motorized angle adjustment and water dispenser” (And for only another $399.99 they will throw in a jig that allows half min. of angle adjustments just for this proper micro-bevels….)

Krenov and Frid would be proud of this guy.
I wouldn't bet too much, but it depends entirely on what you want to call "sharp" .(;)Philip Marcou
Morning Napie,
Just got a lifetime supply of different grits sandpaper free! I run the scale at the local landfill and on one load, from a flooring company, they threw out a bunch of sandpaper. Got 4 rolls (24" diameter x 3" wide) of 120, 150, 180 and 320.
These will work great on my free scary sharp non jigged float glass sharpening system for my plane and chisel blades.
Also got 5 full boxes of 9x11 s-paper, 120, 150, 180, 240, and 320! Also a box each of course and fine emery cloth.

When I was a kid, in Switzerland there was a guy who used to go around sharpening knives and scissors with a similar rig, maybe a little more advanced, in fact he had a large whet stone powered independently from the bike it self. He did a great job though.

This guy in Africa reminded me of what I'd seen some 10 years ago...the marketplace in Kashgar, central Asia. Next to the knife sellers in the market are the sharpeners. Power is by foot pedal, like the old sewing machines. It's not exactly scary sharp, but not too bad...

BTW - the guy on the right side of the photo is stropping a knife on a leather strap. He's holding a tension wheel in his right hand and the knife in his left.
