Soon to get a 21 yr old JWBS-18, preparing a new Jet HD mobile base to receive it. The base can ge set up with different sizes and wheel locations and I’d like to hear any wisdom about that, and also about clearance needed from bottom of saw body to the bottom edge of the lower door, and whether the door needs to fully open 180 degrees. Thanks!

The door doesn't need to open a full 180 which is good because it won't! You can remove the blade even at 90 degrees or less . There is about 1/4" clearance below the bottom door to the base. I have a 3 wheel Jet base that I purchased with the saw. The 3 wheels make it easy to reposition but It's really wobbley and I keep a crow bar handy to lift the base at the back wheel and set the base down on onto a board. If it has the type of guides that they called " European " guides, which was what they were doing around the time that your saw was made,do yourself a favor and throw them away! Get a set of Carters. The tension adjustment indicator is meaningless. I had a old Walker Turner that needed a lot of work and I get my money from working with tools not working on them so I bought the Jet to replace it. I did think I was getting more than I got. The Jet is OK but kind of a toy compared to the Walker Turner.
Thanks Pantalones868 for the sage advice. Re "There is about 1/4" clearance below the bottom door to the base" what I need is the clearance from the door to the floor, if the saw were sitting directly on the floor. The rails of the Jet mobile base are 2" deep so if the clearance from door to floor is say 2 1/4" or less I need to install a panel under the saw to lift it high enough so the door will clear the rails of the mobile base.
The sides of my rolling base are 2" then subtract the bottom supports 1/4" maybe. The sides of the saw base are approximately 2 5/8". My base direct from jet to match my saw was pretty much an exact fit from front to back but about 3/4" wider than the base and I had to shim. What you really want is a base with retractable wheels so you can lift it when you want to move it but then you can set it directly onto the floor for stability. Wheels and casters, even in the locked position, still tend to have a lot of movement in them. Vibration and movement are the enemy . The jet is a little bit top heavy and tall but not particularly heavy in itself so there can be a lot of movement if it's not solidly in contact with the floor. I'd suggest that you get in the habit of releasing the blade tension when not in use. I managed to sheer the shaft to the lower wheel ,broke clean as a whistle! A couple of seconds of vibration and in the time it took me to say " What the f##k?" All hell broke loose! What caused it was I found that the tensioning devise had got in a twist because it's a little bit rinkydink and jammed so that when I tensioned the blade it wasn't done. I had a one inch blade on and I believe that what happened was that it increased tension after I started operating the saw.
